Your guide to a perfect fit with Finir made-to-measure curtains
Measuring for curtains is easier than you might think. With a metal tape measure and a few simple steps, you can achieve a beautifully tailored finish.
All our curtains are made to order in the UK using your exact measurements - so getting accurate measurements is essential.
You will need two measurements – Finished Width and Finished Drop (length)
1. DECIDE HOW YOU’D LIKE YOUR CURTAINS TO HANG
Choose whether your curtains will hang from a pole or a track, we recommend it’s installed before you measure.
Top Tips:
-
For the best coverage and balance, your pole or track should sit around 15 cm above the window and extend 15–20 cm either side.
-
Your pole or track should have a minimum projection of 9cm, ideally 10cm to allow the curtains to stack correctly.
N.B. All our curtains have a ‘return’ and central ‘overlap’ of 10cm unless otherwise requested.
2. MEASURE THE WIDTH
Standard Curtain Track – for a standard curtain track, measure the overall width of the curtain track.

Overlapping Curtain Track – if your curtain track overlaps in the middle, you must measure the overall width of each side, including the overlap section.

Curtain Poles – the width of curtain poles shoud be measured between the finials attached to each end, as shown in image.

We'll calculate the correct gather from your measurements, so there is no need to add anything extra.
We also add what we call ‘spring back’ on the 6” handsewn headings, so the curtains are not tight. They have a bit of ‘give’ which allows them to hang better.
3. MEASURE THE DROP (LENGTH)
Firstly, decide on where you would like your curtains to finish ( sill, below sill or floor)
For both Poles & Tracks we suggest aligning the top of the curtain with the underside of the pole ring or track.
Measure from the required curtain top position to your required bottom hem position, this is your finished length.

It is important to remember that floors and sills are rarely level so be sure to measure in at least 3 positions across the track or pole. Left, middle and Right and use the shortest of these 3 measurements to avoid the curtains dragging.
Length Guidelines:
Above sill - deduct up to 1-2cm -to your preferred length.
Below the sill – add approximately 15cm or to just above any radiators under the window - to your preferred length.
Above the floor finish – deduct up to 1-2cm - to your preferred length.
To puddle your curtains and if this is your preference:
From pole or track to floor, plus 1-2cm (break puddle/ ’tipped’)
From pole or track to floor, plus as much as you want! (true puddle)
4. DOUBLE CHECK YOUR MEASUREMENTS
✔ Have you measured from the correct point (pole, track or ring)?
✔ Are you happy with the curtain drop and finish?
✔ Did you record the pole/track width only (not finials)?
✔ Confident in your heading and lining choices?
If you're unsure about anything, we’re happy to help before you place your order.
Please note: As each curtain is made to your exact specifications, we’re unable to accept returns due to incorrect measurements.
80mm Wave: we use this chart to calculate how many wave gliders/ runners you need. Please email us with specific number of gliders, if different.

Sewing the Tape
There are two positions for your 80mm wave tape to be sewn on. We will sew the tape on for standard gliders, unless you let us know.

Image 2 – Roller gliders SG6099 – 7mm down from the top of the curtains.
