How to measure for your made-to-measure Roman Blind from Finir

Whether you’re fitting your Roman blind inside the window recess or outside it, our guide will walk you through the process step-by-step.

All Finir blinds are made to order in the UK – so getting accurate measurements is essential.

You will need two measurements – Finished Width and Finished Drop (length)

CHOOSE YOUR FITTING STYLE

Inside the recess
Perfect for a clean, built-in look. You’ll need a recess depth of at least 7.5cm and a reasonably straight window reveal.

Outside the recess
Ideal if your recess is shallow, uneven or if you wish to maximise the light. The blind will sit above the window reveal and stack to conceal the top of the window.

N.B.  There will be a ‘glow’ around the blind when down & light outside, where the track projects by 4cm.

INSIDE RECESS

Width

  • Measure the width of the recess in three places: top, middle and bottom.

  • Use the smallest measurement.

  • Deduct 1.5cm from the smallest measurement. This is to ensure the blind fits neatly without rubbing.

  • This is finished width

Drop (Length)

Measure from the top of the recess down to the sill (or floor, if full-length).

Measure in three places and use the smallest drop.

  • This is your finished drop – we do not recommend deducting anything.

OUTSIDE RECESS

Width

  • Measure the width of the window.

Add 5–10cm on each side to allow for overlap – we recommend using your sill width as a guide and to always go 1cm beyond the sill each side.

This total measurement is the finished width of your blind.

Drop ( Length)

Measure where you want the blind to start. This can be anywhere from 5-15cm above the window - if you have the space, we recommend positioning a maximum of 15cm above the window reveal – to maximise the light when open.

Then measure to your desired finished drop – 3cm to 15cm below the sill

•  This is your finished drop

4. INSTALLATION HEIGHT

All our roman blinds have a chain operated mechanism. To meet safety regulations, please measure the installation height and if less than 150cm from the floor – please let us know.

5. BAY OR AWKWARD WINDOWS?

Measuring for bay windows or angled reveals?

  • Use the inside-recess method for each section of the bay

  • Allow for any obstructions like handles

  • If blinds will sit side by side, reduce the width of side panels by around 2cm for clearance ( ensure the fabric will cover the glass)

Not sure what to do? Send us a photo and we’ll advise.

6. FINAL CHECKS

Inside or outside fit selected?
Measured width and drop accurately in three places?
Fixing height noted ?
